Homeschool Activities and Field Trips: How We Bring our San Diego Community Together
Who doesn’t love a field trip? The chance to step away from books and computers to experience the world with all of our senses: new sights, smells, and sounds expand our world and inspire us to think and act creatively. Memories are made and learning is cemented. At our tuition-free TK-12 charter schools, we incorporate field trips into our school year that extend our learning and connect us to the world around us!
Field Trips & Homeschool Meetups Around San Diego
One of the best things about field trips at TLC is that they aren’t just for students - the whole family is invited! We believe that learning happens in community–and it’s more fun when everyone is involved. All families, whether from our Homeschool Program or our Hybrid Homeschool Program, are welcomed to our outings. Time spent together is just as enriching as classroom learning.
Every school year we take trips around the greater San Diego area to learn more about everything from animals and science to technology and art. While every year is different, some of our favorites include:
- The San Diego Zoo
- The Linda Vista Innovation Center
- Musicals & Plays at San Diego Civic Theatre
- Camp Marston for 6th Graders
- Pechanga Arena for San Diego Gulls hockey games
- Birch Aquarium
- Fort Cross Old Timey Adventures
- Junior Achievement at Mission Fed JA Finance Park
- San Diego Air & Space Museum
- Six Flags Magic Mountain
- San Diego Safari Park
- Comic-Con Museum
- Eagle Mining Company
- Coastal Clean Up at San Diego Beaches
Each of these experiences enriches our learning with authentic and meaningful activity. We also learn from each other on field trips - getting out of our comfort zones and enjoying time with our classmates, teachers and families helps us build meaningful connections. These field trip experiences bring us back to campus just a little closer than when we left.
We also host an annual Showcase Event at Balboa Park that celebrates our exceptional TK-12 student learning. Our musicians perform, our writers share poems, and our art is exhibited for all to see. It’s a wonderful celebration of our learning that draws the whole community.
For our juniors and seniors, prom is, of course, a perennial favorite held in a different venue every year as well as Grad Night, which takes our seniors to Disneyland California Adventure Park for one last hurrah.
We even host a handful of summer social meetups, such as one at CeramiCafe in La Mesa. This is a fun, casual time to get together, create something new and see friends that you’ve missed all summer.
The Learning Choice Academy builds a close community by welcoming every enrolled student and family to field trips, our welcome back picnic, school wide assemblies, field days and many more. If you are interested in joining in the fun, our TK-12 charter school has spots available for the 2025-26 school year. Join us for field trips, flexible hybrid and homeschool learning and so much more.
