Meet Debi Gooding: The Heart Behind TLC

For over 30 years, Debi Gooding—affectionately known as Miss Debi—has dedicated her life to education. As Executive Director of The Learning Choice Academy (TLC), she embodies the personalized learning and community connection that defines our tuition-free public charter school. Let’s get to know Miss Debi in her own words:
How did your professional path lead you to TLC?
I have been in education for over 30 years, with 24 of those years dedicated to the charter school world. From a young age, I knew I wanted to become a teacher. I began my career as an instructional assistant while attending college, and later worked as a substitute teacher during my studies.
My first full-time teaching position was in a bilingual 2nd grade classroom in New Mexico. In 1998, I returned to San Diego and continued teaching bilingual 2nd grade. After earning my Reading Specialist certification, I transitioned into the role of a reading specialist, which eventually led me to discover independent study and the charter school environment—where I found my true passion.
In 2004, I became a founding member of The Learning Choice Academy when a group of us branched off from another charter school to create a new vision. I started at TLC as a teacher, then took on roles as principal and assistant director. In 2007, I was honored to step into the role of Executive Director, where I continue to serve and advocate for personalized, student-centered learning.
What do you love about TLC? What sets it apart from other schools?
What I love most about TLC is the strong sense of community and the meaningful connections we build with our families. Our school offers a unique hybrid model that empowers students to become independent thinkers and self-motivated learners.
Parents play an active role in their children's education, and that partnership is a key part of our success. We offer a wide variety of field trips and community activities that enrich our students' learning experiences beyond the classroom. Most importantly, our dedicated and compassionate teachers genuinely care about each student, creating a nurturing environment where all learners can thrive.
What other activities and events do you participate in?
I make it a priority to be involved in as many school activities as possible, as I believe it's important to stay connected with our students, staff, and families beyond the classroom. One of my favorite events is our end-of-year Project Showcase, where students present research projects on topics they are passionate about. It's always inspiring to see their creativity, curiosity, and hard work on full display.
I also really enjoy our Field Days, where we invite members of the community to participate in themed activities and workshops. These events bring learning to life in a hands-on, engaging way and help build a strong connection between our school and the broader community.
What's the most adventurous thing you've ever done?
Teaching is certainly an adventure in itself—but if I had to choose the most adventurous thing I've ever done outside the classroom, it would hands-down be riding Harleys through Europe.
My husband and I joined a group of 70 riders from all over the world for a month-long motorcycle journey that began in Brussels and ended in beautiful Croatia. Along the way, we traveled through some of the most breathtaking landscapes I've ever seen, including the majestic Alps and the stunning Dolomites of northern Italy. Riding through those mountain passes on a Harley, surrounded by the roar of engines and the beauty of nature, was absolutely unforgettable.
What made it even more special was the people. We formed lasting friendships with fellow riders from across the globe—sharing meals, stories, and the shared thrill of the road. It was the perfect mix of adventure, culture, and camaraderie.
It reminded me a lot of education in a way—you never know what's around the next bend, but with the right people beside you and a passion for the journey, the ride is always worth it.
What's a hidden talent or interest most people don't know about you?
Not many people know this, but I have a few hidden passions that bring a lot of joy and creativity to my life outside of education.
I love to garden. Whether it's in my backyard or at our river house, I enjoy growing vegetables, herbs, and fruit. There's something deeply satisfying about planting, nurturing, and harvesting food with your own hands. From fresh tomatoes to basil and citrus trees, gardening helps me stay grounded and connected to nature—and it's a wonderful way to unwind.
Who was your favorite teacher and why?
My favorite teacher was someone who made such a lasting impression on me that she shaped the entire course of my life. Believe it or not, I was lucky enough to have her twice—once in kindergarten and again in fourth grade. And both times, she was nothing short of amazing.
She had a special way of making every student feel seen, valued, and capable. She brought warmth and care into the classroom every single day, and she made learning feel like an adventure. Whether we were reading stories, doing art projects, or just exploring new ideas, she made it fun, engaging, and meaningful.
More than anything, she made me feel safe and supported—and that's something I've carried with me ever since. It was because of her that I knew, even at a young age, that I wanted to be a teacher. She showed me the kind of impact one person can have, and I've spent my career trying to pass that same sense of joy and connection on to my own students.
What's the best compliment you've ever received?
One of the best compliments I ever received came unexpectedly from a parent who called me out of the blue. She wanted to express her deep gratitude for the care and attention I showed her children as their teacher. She thanked me for truly listening to them and genuinely caring about their success and well-being.
That moment meant the world to me because it reminded me why I do this work. Knowing that a family felt supported and valued because of my efforts is the greatest affirmation a teacher can receive.
